Quick answer: To set a custom ringtone for one contact on Android, open Contacts, choose the person, tap More (⋮) → Set ringtone (Samsung: Change ringtone/vibration) and pick your tone. On iPhone, open Contacts → the person → Edit → Ringtone, choose a tone and tap Done.
Imagine knowing who is calling before you even pick up the phone. With a custom ringtone for one contact, your partner, your parents or your boss can each have their own sound. It is free, it takes less than a minute, and it works on every Android phone and iPhone.
Here is how to do it, step by step.
Before you start: get a tone
- Choose a tone that suits the person. Soft Romantic ringtones work for a partner, cute Baby ringtones for family, and a clear Instrumental ringtone for work.
- Download it: MP3 for Android, M4R (or MP3 on iOS 26) for iPhone.
- Make sure the tone is on your phone. On iPhone, add it first with our iPhone ringtone guide.
Samsung Galaxy
- Open the Contacts app.
- Tap the person’s name.
- Tap Edit, then View more if needed (or tap More → Change ringtone/vibration on newer versions).
- Tap Ringtone and allow access to files if asked.
- Tap the + button to add your downloaded MP3, or choose from the list.
- Tap Back and then Save.
Note: contacts saved only on the SIM card cannot have a custom ringtone. Move them to your phone or Samsung account first.
Google Pixel and phones with Google Contacts
- Open the Contacts app (or the Phone app → Contacts).
- Tap the person’s name.
- Tap the three dots (More) at the top right.
- Tap Set ringtone.
- Tap My Sounds or +, choose your MP3 and tap Save.
Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO
- Open Contacts and tap the person.
- Tap Ringtone (sometimes under More).
- Choose Local ringtone or Choose local ringtone, then pick your file from Downloads.
- Tap OK.
Oppo, Vivo, Infinix and Tecno
The steps are very similar:
- Open Contacts and select the person.
- Tap Edit or the three dots.
- Look for Ringtone, Set ringtone or Contact ringtone.
- Choose Local ringtone or My sounds and pick the MP3.
- Save the contact.
If your downloaded file is not listed, move it into the Ringtones folder with the Files app, as shown in our Android ringtone guide.
iPhone
- Open Contacts (or Phone → Contacts).
- Tap the person’s name, then tap Edit at the top right.
- Scroll down and tap Ringtone.
- Choose a tone. Custom tones you added appear at the top of the list.
- Turn on Emergency Bypass if you want this person’s calls to ring even in Silent or Do Not Disturb.
- Tap Done, then Done again.
You can also set a special Text Tone for this person on the same screen.
Set a custom tone for one contact on WhatsApp
WhatsApp has its own settings. Open the chat, tap the person’s name, then tap Notifications to choose a ringtone and message tone just for them. On Android you can use any MP3. Full steps are in our WhatsApp ringtone guide.
Ideas for contact ringtones
- Partner: a soft piano or romantic melody.
- Parents: a calm, warm instrumental or a respectful Naat ringtone.
- Boss or clients: a short, professional tone you will never ignore.
- Best friend: something playful from Funny ringtones.
- Kids or school: a bright, clear tone you will hear anywhere, like those in Loud ringtones.
Set a custom vibration pattern too
A special ringtone is great, but you cannot always hear it. Many phones also let you set a unique vibration for a contact:
- iPhone: in the contact’s Ringtone screen, tap Haptics (or Vibration) and choose a pattern or tap Create New Vibration to make your own rhythm.
- Samsung: in Change ringtone/vibration, tap Vibration pattern and choose one of the patterns.
- Other Android phones: look for Vibration in the contact’s settings. Not all brands offer this.
With a unique vibration, you can tell who is calling even with your phone in your pocket on silent.
Set a custom message tone for one person
The same idea works for texts. On iPhone, the contact edit screen has a Text Tone option right below Ringtone. In Google Messages, open the conversation, tap the three dots → Details → Notifications → Sound. On Samsung Messages, open the conversation, tap the three dots → Notification sound. Short sounds from our Notification sounds page work well here.
Contact groups and favourites
If you want the same tone for a whole group, such as all your family members, set it for each person one by one; most phones do not support group ringtones. Another trick is to use Do Not Disturb with exceptions: allow calls only from your Favourites, so everyone else stays silent at night while your family can still reach you.
Keep your contact ringtones when you change phone
Contact ringtones are stored on the phone, not in the contact itself. When you move to a new phone, your contacts arrive, but their special ringtones often do not. Keep a copy of your tone files and set them again after the move. It only takes a few minutes, and our guides will walk you through it on any brand.
Troubleshooting
The custom ringtone does not play. Check that the contact is saved on your phone or Google/Samsung account, not only on the SIM card.
My downloaded tone is missing from the list. On Android, move the MP3 into the Ringtones folder. On iPhone, make sure you added it as a ringtone first.
Calls from this person still use the default tone. Some caller ID or call-blocker apps override contact ringtones. Check their settings or temporarily disable them.
The ringtone resets after a phone update. Re-select the tone in the contact’s settings. Keep tone files in internal storage, not on an SD card.
Frequently asked questions
Can I set a different ringtone for each contact?
Yes. Every Android phone and iPhone lets you assign a unique ringtone to each saved contact.
Why can’t I set a ringtone for a SIM contact?
SIM cards only store names and numbers. Move the contact to your phone or online account to add a ringtone.
Can I use a downloaded MP3 for one contact on iPhone?
Yes, after adding it as a ringtone. On iOS 26 or later, use the Files app and Share → Use as Ringtone, then pick it in the contact.
Will the contact ringtone work on WhatsApp calls?
Not automatically. Set it separately in WhatsApp under the contact’s Notifications settings.
Can a contact ringtone ring in silent mode?
On iPhone, turn on Emergency Bypass in the contact’s ringtone settings. On Android, add the person to your Do Not Disturb exceptions.
Do custom contact ringtones use extra battery or storage?
No. A ringtone file is usually under 1 MB and has no effect on battery life.
