How to Set a Ringtone on Android (Any Phone)

[rt_updated]

On this page

Quick answer: To set a ringtone on Android, download the MP3, open Settings → Sound & vibration → Phone ringtone, tap My sounds or +, choose the file and tap Save. On Samsung the path is Settings → Sounds and vibration → Ringtone → +. No app is needed on any brand.

Android lets you use almost any sound as your ringtone, and you do not need an app to do it. The steps are nearly the same on every phone; only the menu names change a little between brands.

Below you will find the general method first, then exact steps to set a ringtone on Android phones from Samsung, Google Pixel, Xiaomi (Redmi and POCO), Oppo, Vivo, Infinix and Tecno. We finish with a no-app trick that works when your phone refuses to show a file.

Step 1: Download your ringtone

  1. Open a tone on RingtoneDownload.org, for example from Ringtones for Android.
  2. Press play to check you like it.
  3. Tap Download MP3. The file is saved to your phone’s Downloads folder.

MP3 works on every Android version. Our files are small (often under 500 KB), so the download is quick.

Step 2: The general Android method

These steps work on most phones with Android 12 or newer:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Sound & vibration (sometimes just Sound).
  3. Tap Phone ringtone or Ringtone.
  4. Tap My sounds, Add ringtone, Local ringtone or the + button.
  5. Find the file in Downloads and tap it.
  6. Tap Save, Done or the back arrow.

Your new tone is set. Call yourself from another phone to test it.

Samsung Galaxy (One UI)

  1. Open Settings → Sounds and vibration.
  2. Tap Ringtone. If you have two SIM cards, choose the SIM first.
  3. Tap the + button at the top right.
  4. If asked, tap Allow so the sound picker can see your files.
  5. Select your MP3. You can turn on Highlights only to start at the most interesting part.
  6. Tap Done.

Google Pixel

  1. Open Settings → Sound & vibration.
  2. Tap Phone ringtone.
  3. Tap My Sounds, then the + button at the bottom right.
  4. Choose the MP3 from Downloads.
  5. Make sure it is selected and tap Save.

Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO (HyperOS / MIUI)

  1. Open Settings → Sound & vibration.
  2. Tap Ringtone (choose the SIM if asked).
  3. Tap Choose local ringtone or Local, then File manager.
  4. Find the MP3 in Downloads and tap it, then tap OK.

Some Xiaomi phones open the Themes app first. If that happens, look for Choose local ringtone at the bottom of the screen.

Oppo and Realme (ColorOS / Realme UI)

  1. Open Settings → Sound & vibration.
  2. Tap Ringtone and select the SIM.
  3. Tap Local ringtone or Choose from files.
  4. Select the MP3 and tap the back arrow to save.

Vivo (Funtouch OS / OriginOS)

  1. Open Settings → Sound & vibration.
  2. Tap Ringtone or Incoming call ringtone.
  3. Tap Local or Custom ringtone.
  4. Choose the file from Downloads.

Infinix and Tecno (XOS / HiOS)

  1. Open Settings → Sound & vibration.
  2. Tap Phone ringtone and choose the SIM.
  3. Tap Local ringtone, My sounds or the + button.
  4. Pick the MP3 and confirm.

The no-app method: move the file to the Ringtones folder

If your downloaded file does not show up in the ringtone list, Android may not have scanned it yet. You can fix this with the built-in Files app:

  1. Open the Files app (on Samsung, My Files).
  2. Go to Downloads and long-press your MP3.
  3. Tap Move (or Copy), then go to Internal storage → Ringtones.
  4. Tap Move here.
  5. Go back to Settings → Sound & vibration → Phone ringtone. The tone now appears in the main list.

You can do the same from a computer: connect your phone with USB, choose File transfer, and copy the MP3 into the Ringtones folder. For alarm sounds, use the Alarms folder; for alerts, use Notifications.

Set a notification sound or alarm

The same MP3 can also be your:

Set a ringtone with Google Files or a file manager

Some phones let you set a ringtone straight from a file manager, without opening Settings at all:

  1. Open Files by Google (or your phone’s file manager) and go to Downloads.
  2. Tap the three dots next to your MP3, or long-press it.
  3. Look for Set as ringtone or Use as in the menu. Not every phone shows this option.
  4. Choose Phone ringtone, Notification sound or Alarm.

If the option is missing, use the Settings method above. It works on every Android phone.

Choosing the right ringtone for Android

Android plays ringtones through a small speaker, often while the phone is in a pocket or bag. Tones with a clear melody in the middle range carry best. Very bassy tones lose their punch, and very long intros delay the moment you notice the call. Our Ringtones for Android are all trimmed to start instantly and levelled to the same loudness, so they sound clear on any phone, from flagship to budget.

If you share a room or office with other Android users, choose something less common than the default tones. A calm Piano ringtone or a bright Instrumental ringtone stands out without being harsh.

Back up your custom ringtones

When you switch phones, custom ringtones are not always copied over. Keep a copy of your favourite MP3s in your cloud storage or on a computer. On your new phone, download them into the Ringtones folder and select them again. Tones you saved with the heart on our site stay in your browser on the old phone, so it is a good idea to note their names too.

Troubleshooting

The file is not in the list. Use the Files → Ringtones method above, or restart your phone.

The ringtone plays from the middle. Some phones (like Samsung) have Highlights only turned on. Turn it off to play from the start.

The ringtone reverts to default. This can happen if you deleted the file or moved it to an SD card that was removed. Keep ringtones in internal storage.

The sound is too quiet. Increase the ringer volume with the volume keys while on the home screen, or pick a tone from our Loud ringtones page.
