Quick answer: To set a ringtone on iPhone with iOS 26 or later, download an MP3 or M4A of 30 seconds or less, open it in the Files app, tap Share → Use as Ringtone. On older iOS, import the file into GarageBand and use Share → Ringtone, or drag an M4R file onto your iPhone in Finder (Mac) or the Apple Devices app (Windows).
Want to set a ringtone on iPhone without paying for it or fighting with iTunes? Good news: it is much easier than it used to be. Since iOS 26, your iPhone can turn a short audio file into a ringtone in a few taps. If you are on an older version, GarageBand or a computer will do the job.
This guide covers all four free methods, step by step. Pick the one that matches your iPhone.
Before you start: what you need
- An audio file of 30 seconds or less. Apple limits ringtones to 30 seconds. Longer files are trimmed or rejected.
- The right format. The Files method accepts MP3 and M4A. The computer method uses M4R (the iPhone ringtone format). GarageBand accepts most common formats.
- A tone you are allowed to use. Songs you bought on Apple Music are protected and cannot become ringtones. Every tone on RingtoneDownload.org is free and royalty-free, with both MP3 and M4R files.
Not sure which iOS version you have? Open Settings → General → About and look at iOS Version.
Method 1: Files app on iOS 26 or later (fastest)
This is the easiest way and needs no computer or extra app.
- Download the tone. Open a tone page in Safari, for example from our Ringtones for iPhone list, and tap Download MP3. If Safari asks, tap Download.
- Open the Files app. Go to Browse → Downloads (or the folder you chose for downloads).
- Tap the file to open the preview.
- Tap the Share button (the square with an arrow pointing up).
- Scroll down and tap Use as Ringtone.
- Your iPhone opens the Sounds & Haptics settings with the new tone selected. That is it. It is now your ringtone.
You can also use a recording from the Voice Memos app the same way: tap the three dots on a memo, tap Share and choose Use as Ringtone.
Tip: If you do not see “Use as Ringtone”, check that the file is 30 seconds or shorter and that your iPhone runs iOS 26 or later.
Method 2: GarageBand on your iPhone (any recent iOS)
GarageBand is Apple’s free music app. It can export any audio file as a ringtone right on your phone.
- Install GarageBand from the App Store if you do not have it. It is free.
- Download the MP3 from our site so it is saved in the Files app.
- Open GarageBand and start a new project. Choose Audio Recorder and tap Voice.
- Tap the Tracks view button (the icon with stacked lines) at the top.
- Tap the Loop Browser icon (it looks like a loop of string) and open the Files tab.
- Tap Browse items from the Files app, find your MP3 and tap it.
- Press and hold the file in the list, then drag it to the far left of the track area.
- Tap the small arrow in the top-left corner and choose My Songs.
- Press and hold your new project, tap Share, then tap Ringtone.
- Give it a name and tap Export. If it is longer than 30 seconds, GarageBand offers to shorten it automatically.
- After the export, tap Use sound as… and choose Standard Ringtone, Standard Text Tone or Assign to contact.
It looks like a lot of steps, but after the first time it takes about a minute.
Method 3: Finder on a Mac
If you have a Mac, you can copy M4R ringtones directly.
- Download the M4R file from a tone page on your Mac.
- Connect your iPhone to the Mac with a USB cable. Unlock the phone and tap Trust if asked.
- Open Finder and click your iPhone in the sidebar under Locations.
- Make sure the General tab is open.
- Drag the M4R file from your Downloads folder onto the iPhone window.
- On your iPhone, open Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone. The new tone appears at the top of the list.
Method 4: Apple Devices app on Windows
On Windows 10 or 11, Apple’s Apple Devices app replaces iTunes for syncing.
- Install Apple Devices from the Microsoft Store.
- Download the M4R file on your PC.
- Connect your iPhone with a cable and tap Trust on the phone.
- Open Apple Devices and select your iPhone in the sidebar.
- Drag the M4R file onto the iPhone in the sidebar. The tone is copied over.
- On the iPhone, choose it under Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone.
If you still use iTunes on an older PC, the same drag-and-drop works: drag the M4R onto your iPhone under Devices.
Which method should you use?
| Your situation | Best method |
|---|---|
| iOS 26 or later | Files app (Method 1) |
| Older iOS, no computer | GarageBand (Method 2) |
| You use a Mac | Finder (Method 3) |
| You use a Windows PC | Apple Devices (Method 4) |
How to use the tone for texts, alarms or one contact
Once a tone is on your iPhone, you can use it anywhere iOS lets you choose a sound:
- Text tone: Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Text Tone.
- Alarm: Clock → Alarms → tap an alarm → Sound.
- One contact: Contacts → choose a person → Edit → Ringtone. Our guide on setting a ringtone for one contact explains more.
- WhatsApp: WhatsApp on iPhone uses its own list of sounds. See how to set a WhatsApp ringtone.
Troubleshooting
“Use as Ringtone” is missing. Your iPhone may be on iOS 18 or older, or the file is longer than 30 seconds. Use GarageBand instead, or download a shorter tone.
The tone does not appear in the ringtone list. Restart your iPhone. If you used a computer, make sure the file ends in .m4r and not .m4a or .mp3.
GarageBand says the song is protected. Apple Music and other DRM-protected songs cannot be used. Use a royalty-free tone instead, like the ones on our Piano ringtones page.
The ringtone is cut off. iPhone ringtones stop at 30 seconds. Choose a shorter tone, or trim it in GarageBand before exporting.
How to remove a custom ringtone
Open Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone, swipe left on the custom tone and tap Delete. If it was added from a computer, you can also remove it in Finder or Apple Devices.
